Zoned garnets in metapelites and P-T-deformation path interpretation of the Variscan inverted metamorphic sequence of Haut-Allier[Zonierte Granate in Metapeliten und Interpretation mit P-T-Deformations-Pfaden in der varikischen invers-metamorphen Serie von Haut-Allier, französisches Zentralmassiv]
The porphyroblasts are growth-zoned, even in muscovite-free assemblages with kyanite + K-feldspar and sillimanite + K-feldspar. Different garnet XMg-XCa evolution trends are observed. Intermineral microstructures provided criteria for temporary local equilibria of zoned garnets, mica, plagioclases, and for a structurally controlled application of geothermobarometers based on cation exchange and net transfer reactions. This allowed syndeformational P-T paths to be reconstructed from successive stages of garnet growth in single samples. Maximum temperatures and P-T paths of metamorphism confirm the inverted position of metamorphic units and suggest a heterogeneous P-T evolution. The shapes of the P-T-deformation paths do not support an uplift from mid-crustal levels by crustal extension, but rather models of an early-Variscan syntectonic burial and partial uplift followed by thrusting and nappe tectonics during further uplift.
